Energy: Ireland to produce wind power for UK homes

It is planned to create 40 wind farms in the Bog of Allen which altogether will have 700 wind turbines. An agreement will be signed by the ministers of Communication, Energy and Natural Resources, Irish Pat Rabitte and the British Ed Davey.

The wind energy produced in the new farms from the year 2017 onwards will be exported to the UK to serve millions of homes. 10 percent of the U.K.'s renewable energy target would be taken care of and British consumers would save £7bn. It also would hold economic benefits and create new jobs in both countries.

But the project is met by objections also, as it will have its impact on the landscape. Because the area is not very windy, the towers will have to be higher than usual, about 600 feet. They will be the highest turbines worldwide. This fact meets the opponent’s anger – the operators say it is better to build slightly larger turbines but fewer of them.

In spite of both countries showing mutual interest and a memorandum of understanding being signed it still is early days, and decisions about the way energy will be exported have not been finalized.
