Irish Bonds Withstand European Debt Markets

Irish government bonds have bucked the downward price trend in the latest European debt markets. The 10-year borrowing costs are now close to 10pc for the first time since June 20.

This news comes as a sign that investors are more optimistic about Irish longer term prospects. This is furthered by the fact the yield on Irish government bonds dipped below that of Portugalís yesterday.

Despite prospects remaining weak, the Irish government debt seems to be outperforming the market in comparison to Greece and Portugal who both saw yields rise yesterday while Irish yields fell. Italy and Spain are also under pressure because of sharp yield rises over the past week.

Subsequent to the revised bailout deal, Irish bond yields are still three times what the country has to pay, which conclusively means no immediate prospects exist regarding a return to markets without a very large and sustained fall in bond yields. That said, trends are moving in the right direction previous to the European leaders' summit on July 21 as bonds have decreased from the high of 13.8pc to 13.39pc yesterday. Also since the summit, the theoretical cost of borrowing over two years has dropped back from 22pc to 13.73pc.
