Prime Minister Unveils Action Plan for Jobs 2012

Ireland’s Prime Minister Edna Kenny has today detailed what has been described as an “urgent” plan pledging to create 100,000 positions over the next four years.  In a statement Kenny said, “Today we set out the Action Plan for Jobs – the third major strand of our economic plan to get Ireland working, encompassing the wider economic reforms needed to accelerate jobs growth.” The plan is reported to contain 270 actions involving 15 Government departments and 36 State agencies in an attempt to implement a list of initiatives. The plan seeks to help companies expands their scope for exporting goods, provide credit to small and medium sized enterprises, improve competitiveness and attract more international investment to Ireland.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton said that the initiative was an “ambitious programme to reform across government and the economy to improve supports for businesses and remove barriers to job-creation in Ireland.” He added that the government will “improve access to finance for small businesses, reduce costs, and red tape, and improve supports for exports, management and innovation. It will not be easy, but we are determined to implement the plan, rebuild the economy and create the jobs that we so badly need.”

There are many challenges in creating sustainable jobs, the official unemployment total is just over 300,000, a rate of 14.2 % compared to the lowest in the Eurozone, Austria 4.1%. Many are questioning where these new jobs will come from considering an expected period of slowing economic growth across the world. Ireland’s economy is struggling to grow under its bailout austerity program requiring it to reduce a large budget deficit of about 9.8 %.
